Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

As you grow closer to the Lord, the words that come out of your mouth will change. Think about what happens when you spend time reading the Word.

The Word of God will build you up and help you grow. This is what you want the words that you use, to do to others. Edification means to fortify and build up.

Are your words building up others? Are they gracious? Or, do you use language that tears people down? Ask God to help you speak words of edification and grace. ~ Jeff M Newman

1 Corinthians 15:52 in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

In context, Paul is explaining that because Jesus Christ rose from the dead, everyone who belongs to Him will also be raised. This includes believers who have already died and are now with Christ, as well as those who are alive when He returns.

When Christ comes, the dead in Christ will be raised with glorified bodies, and believers who are alive will be instantly transformed “in the twinkling of an eye.” At that moment, every believer will receive a glorified body that is free from sin, sickness, suffering, and death.

This verse beautifully illustrates God’s complete work of salvation. The moment you put your faith in Jesus Christ, you are justified, declared righteous before God. Throughout your life, God is sanctifying you, setting you apart for His purposes and transforming you into the likeness of Christ. Then, when Jesus returns, you will be glorified. God’s work in you will be complete, and you will be made perfectly like Christ.

This moment could happen at any time. Live each day in light of Christ’s return. Pursue holiness, faithfully share the gospel, and encourage others with the hope of His coming. No matter what you face today, remember that a glorious future awaits you. One day, you will receive a glorified body and live in the presence of the Lord forever.~ Jeff M Newman

1 Corinthians 13:12 Now we see but a dim reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

This verse points to our future glorification. When Jesus returns, we will see Him face to face. We will know Him in a way we have never known Him before and we will enjoy perfect fellowship with Christ forever.

Be encouraged. A day is coming when you will see Jesus in all His glory and be perfectly conformed to His likeness. Every struggle with sin will be gone, and you will enjoy His presence for all eternity.

Until that day, spend time in God’s Word, prayer, fellowship, and worship. God is preparing you for the day when you will see Christ as He is. Keep your eyes fixed on Him and live each day in the hope of His glorious return. ~ Jeff M Newman

Luke 24:27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was written in all the Scriptures about Himself.

In context, Jesus was walking with two of His disciples on the road to Emmaus after His resurrection. Although He did not immediately reveal His identity to them, He did something even more important, He opened the Scriptures and explained everything written about Himself. Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, Jesus showed that the entire Bible points to Him. He was teaching them about prophecy.

Biblical prophecy is God’s revelation of His redemptive plan for history, centered on Jesus Christ. While prophecy includes foretelling future events, its greatest purpose is to reveal the person and work of Christ. The goal of prophecy is to deepen our understanding of Jesus, strengthen our love for Him, and increase our confidence in God’s sovereign plan.

When you see Christ in prophecy, you are moved to holy living, steadfast hope, and faithful service. Every prophecy reminds us that God keeps His promises and that Jesus will accomplish everything He has declared.

As you study biblical prophecy, ask yourself, “What does this passage reveal about Jesus?” The greatest event in prophecy is not merely the unfolding of end-time events but the glorious revelation of Jesus Christ, the King of kings and Lord of lords. Let every study of prophecy stir your heart to worship Him, trust Him, and eagerly await the day when you will see Him face to face. ~ Jeff M Newman

2 Corinthians 4:17 For our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory that is far beyond comparison.

This is written by the Apostle Paul. He had experienced intense suffering for Christ. He had been beaten, imprisoned, shipwrecked, stoned, and constantly threatened with death.

Despite all of this, he calls these trials light when compared with the eternal glory that awaits believers. He teaches that our present afflictions are momentary and that God is using them to produce for us an eternal weight of glory that is beyond all comparison.

Trials are difficult and can easily cause us to focus on the present instead of eternity. The next time you face a trial or difficulty, ask God to give you an eternal perspective. Trials are not merely meant to make you uncomfortable. God uses them to accomplish His good purposes in your life. When we lose sight of that truth, we can easily become discouraged or begin to complain.

Remember that no matter how difficult your circumstances are, praise God that He promises to use every trial in your life for His eternal purposes. Trust that God is with you right now. He loves you, His grace is sufficient for you, and He is using every difficulty to make you more like Christ as He prepares you for the day when you will be glorified with Him. ~ Jeff M Newman

Philippians 4:4-7 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be apparent to all. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

How can you live a life of continual rejoicing, when you have difficult relationships with others? The first is to treat those people with grace and gentleness. Think about what Jesus did for you on the cross.

Jesus died for people that hated Him and wanted to kill Him. Next, pray for them each day. Think about how much time they occupy your mind right now, and replace that time with prayer.

Be thankful to God for them, knowing that God is using them to help you mature. God is with you during this whole process and will help you. Ask Him for the strength to act with grace and to pray for these people you struggle with each day. ~ Jeff M Newman

Welcome to the Hope Bible School verse-by-verse Bible study of 1 John. This is Jeff M Newman. Get a new lesson every other week on Mondays at 12:00 PM Pacific.

In Lesson 92, we are going to study the third part of 1 John 3:9.

Let’s read this part of the verse:

1 John 3:9...they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.

Let’s go over the definitions of the words.

They cannot (3756. ou, ouk, ouch) (1410. dunamai) — means they absolutely are not able or do not have the power to. It refers to ability, not merely a decision or permission.

Go on sinning (264. hamartanó) — means to sin, to miss God’s mark, to violate His will, or act contrary to His righteous standard. The present tense indicates continual or habitual action, referring to an ongoing pattern or practice of sin rather than an isolated act.

Because (3754. hoti) — introduces the reason or explanation for what has just been stated.

They have been born (1080. gennaó) of (1537. ek or ex) God (2316. theos) — means to have been spiritually born or brought forth by God. The perfect tense describes a completed act with continuing results. It refers to the new birth God has accomplished in the believer, resulting in a new nature and an ongoing relationship with Him as a child of God.

In other words, those who have been born of God are absolutely unable to continue living in an ongoing pattern or practice of sin because they have been spiritually born of God, receiving a new nature and entering into an ongoing relationship with Him.

In this part of the verse, John is not saying that if you are a believer, you will never commit another sin. Rather, he is teaching that you cannot continue living in a habitual pattern of sin. This is because the new birth has fundamentally changed who you are.

John is not teaching sinless perfection. Earlier in the letter he makes it clear that, as a believer, you will still sin (1 John 1:8)(Lesson 17), you must confess your sins (1 John 1:9)(Lesson 18), and Jesus Christ is your Advocate when you do sin (1 John 2:1)(Lesson 20).

There is no contradiction. John is distinguishing between occasional acts of sin and a life characterized by the continual practice of sin.

When you place your faith in Jesus Christ, God gives you new spiritual life. Instead of living a life characterized by sin, you now live as one whose identity is rooted in being a child of God. Your relationship to sin has fundamentally changed because your relationship to God has fundamentally changed.

Being born of God is a permanent work with continuing results. The new birth permanently changes who you are. Your old life no longer defines you. You now belong to God as His child. God has given you spiritual life, and His life remains in you forever.

Because you have been born of God, you cannot be content to continue living in an ongoing pattern of sin. Instead, your life is increasingly characterized by righteousness as God continues His transforming work in you.

In John 3:6 Jesus says, "Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit." When you were physically born, you received physical life from your parents. But when you put your faith in Jesus Christ, you were spiritually born of God through the work of the Holy Spirit. God gave you new spiritual life, fundamentally changing who you are.

Because you have been born of the Spirit, you now have a new nature that produces a new way of living. This is why you cannot continue living in a habitual pattern of sin. Your new life in Christ is no longer characterized by sin but by your identity as a child of God.

John 3:6 Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit.

In 2 Corinthians 5:17, we learn that when you are in Christ, you are a new creation. God has not just improved your old life, He has given you a new identity. The old person you were before Christ is gone, and you now have a new life in Him.

Because you are no longer the same person, you cannot continue living the way you once did. God is changing your desires, your actions, and your heart to reflect your new identity in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

In Romans 6:1-2, we read that when you died to sin through Christ, sin is no longer your master. You cannot continue living in the same way because God has given you a new life through His grace.

Romans 6:1-2 What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2 Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer?

In conclusion, John is not simply teaching that you will sin less. His main point is that sin becomes foreign to who you are, because you are born of God. Just like a fish cannot live outside of water because it goes against its nature, a child of God cannot comfortably remain in a life of habitual sin because it contradicts the new life God has placed within you.

Be encouraged, God knows you will still struggle with sin. But because of His work in your life, you will continually be drawn back to Him. The fact that you grieve over sin and desire to walk in obedience is evidence that God’s Spirit is at work within you.

When you sin, confess it to Him immediately. Ask God for strength to resist sin and walk in victory. He promises to forgive you and restore your fellowship with Him. God is not expecting sinless perfection, but He is transforming you to become more like Christ. Trust the work He is doing in you.

Here’s a prayer to help you to respond to today’s lesson:

Lord, thank You for making me a new creation in Christ. Help me turn away from sin and walk in obedience to You. When I fall, remind me of Your grace and lead me back to You. Strengthen me by Your Spirit to resist sin and live a life that honors You. Amen.

Let’s read this part of the verse one more time:

1 John 3:9...they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

True fellowship with other believers comes when you put God at the center of your life. You can only have a relationship with God because of what Jesus did for you on the cross. Once you believe that Jesus paid the penalty for your sins, spend time in the Bible and with others who believe in Him.

As you walk in the light, God will show you areas where you need to grow. Seek prayer and accountability from believers who also desire to walk in the light. This will help you grow both spiritually and in your relationships with others. ~ Jeff M Newman

John 6:27 Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”

You do not have to work to get eternal life. The Son of Man, Jesus, will give you eternal life. Jesus says, that He is the “Bread of Life.” When you eat the food that Jesus offers, you will live forever.

How do you do this? You start by putting your faith in Jesus. Then, you regularly consume the eternal Word of God. Jesus is the eternal Word of God. When Jesus was tempted in the desert, He answered the tempter by saying, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” (Matthew 4:4) ~ Jeff M Newman

Romans 8:28-30 And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those God foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those He predestined, He also called; those He called, He also justified; those He justified, He also glorified.

These verses remind us that even in the midst of suffering, God is accomplishing His perfect purpose for His children.

Life can be difficult, and we may not always understand what God is doing. Yet we have the assurance that He is working every circumstance together for our good.

According to verse 29, that good is that we would be conformed to the image of His Son. God is using every joy, trial, and hardship to make us more like Christ, and one day He will complete that work in our glorification.

Glorification is the final stage of salvation, when we will be completely transformed into Christ’s likeness, free from every trace of sin, raised with glorified bodies, and made perfect in our love for God and for others.

Even when life is painful and God’s purposes seem hidden, we can trust that He is faithfully accomplishing His eternal plan and will bring every believer safely to glory. ~ Jeff M Newman

John 14:1-3 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well. 2 In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

In these verses, Jesus is speaking to His disciples on the night before His crucifixion. They were troubled because He had told them that He was going to leave them. Jesus comforted them by promising that He was going to prepare a place for them in His Father’s house.

This promise is for every believer. Jesus will return and bring all who have trusted in Him into His presence for all eternity. Live each day with the hope that one day you will see Jesus face to face.

This hope should motivate you to pursue holiness and grow in your relationship with Christ. Abide in Him, fill your life with the Word of God, pray continually, confess your sins, and depend on the Holy Spirit for the strength to resist temptation and obey God’s Word. As you wait for Christ’s return, faithfully share the gospel and help others follow Him. ~ Jeff M Newman

1 John 4:16 And we have come to know and believe the love that God has for us. God is love; whoever abides in love abides in God, and God in him.

One of the most important things to understand about God is that He is love. He loves you constantly. The more you understand how much He loves you, the more you will love Him. And, the more you love Him, the more you will love others as He loves you.

Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace

In order for there to be forgiveness of sins, there has to be the shedding of blood. When you live in sin, you are a slave to it. The price of redemption is death. Jesus redeemed you from a life of slavery to sin by dying on the cross for you.

Hebrews 10:23-25 Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. 25 Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

There are many influences all around you that want you to loosen your hold on your hope in Jesus. These influences want to distract you and cause you to look away. Instead, hold tightly to your hope in Jesus without wavering.

Also, encourage those around you to look to Jesus and love others as He loves us. Spend time with other believers, speak about your love for Jesus, and encourage them in their walk with Him.~ Jeff M Newman

As you get to know God more, the more you will experience His grace and peace. God says that if you look to Him, He will keep you in perfect peace. Spend time reading the Bible and letting His Word dwell in you richly.

The more you get to know God, the more you will understand how incredibly gracious He is. You will be able to recognize His grace at work in your life.

Don’t hold to the teachings of Balam, the Nicolaitans, or Jezebel. These teachings encourage you to compromise your faith and commit sexual immortality. If you do, repent and follow the teachings of Christ.

Philippians 2:8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross.

The Father God sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. To pay the penalty for our sins, Jesus humbled Himself and became a man. Since all have sinned, only a sinless person could pay the penalty for all our sins. Through Jesus’ obedience to His Father, we are able to live forever with God. ~ Jeff M Newman
