Abstain From the Desires of the Flesh
1 Peter 2:11

Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from the desires of the flesh, which war against your soul. (1 Peter 2:11)
In this verse, Peter reminds his readers that they are foreigners and exiles. This means that as followers of Christ, we belong to the Kingdom of God and are not of this world. We are temporary travelers here, passing through on our way to live forever in God’s presence. Because of this, Peter warns us that the desires of the flesh are waging war against our souls. These desires are not neutral. They are spiritual enemies that seek to weaken and destroy us.
The way we fight these desires is to abstain from them. To abstain means to hold back, to stay away from, and to refuse to engage in what is harmful. It is a deliberate and intentional choice rooted in knowing who we are in Christ.
And you are not alone in this battle. God has given you the church, brothers and sisters who can walk with you. Seek accountability, stay in fellowship, cut off the sources of temptation, and resist the desires of the flesh. God’s Spirit strengthens you, and His people support you as you walk in holiness. ~ Jeff M Newman
