1 John 3:9 Anyone born of God refuses to practice sin, because God’s seed abides in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.
John is not teaching that Christians will never struggle with sin or become perfectly sinless in this life. Earlier in the letter, he teaches that believers still sin and need to confess their sins to God.
In this passage, John is speaking about a continual lifestyle of unrepentant sin. He is describing someone who is comfortable practicing sin without conviction, repentance, or a desire to turn back to God.
When someone is born of God, they become a new creation through faith in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit comes to live within them and begins transforming their heart and life.
Believers are no longer slaves to sin in the same way they once were because God has freed them from its dominion.
The good news is that God is with you and is continually shaping you to become more like Christ. If you are struggling today, do not lose hope.
Turn to God in repentance, depend on His grace, and ask Him for help. He is faithful to strengthen you, transform you, and continue the work He has begun in your life. ~ Jeff M Newman
