1 Thessalonians 5:18 Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
God’s will for your life is that you would continually give thanks, no matter what circumstances you are facing. This can be difficult because we are not naturally thankful when things are hard. However, we can trust that God is working in every circumstance for our good. Romans 8:28 tells us that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
God is in the process of sanctifying you. He is continually transforming you to become more like Jesus, and He can use the circumstances of your life to accomplish His purposes in you. Romans 8:28–29 connects God’s purpose in our lives with being conformed to the image of His Son.
Jesus repeatedly gave thanks to the Father. He gave thanks before feeding the 5,000, thanked the Father for revealing spiritual truth, gave thanks before raising Lazarus, and gave thanks at the Last Supper. Jesus trusted His Father even when He knew suffering was ahead.
Ask God to help you recognize how He is working in your life. When circumstances are difficult, bring your pain to Him, trust His character and promises, and look for reasons to give thanks. You may not understand what God is doing, but you can trust that He is faithful and that He is continuing His work of making you more like Christ. ~ Jeff M Newman
