1 John 1:5–7 And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
If someone is habitually practicing sin, they cannot truly have fellowship with God while walking in that pattern. This passage is describing a person who claims to know God but has rejected the truth and is walking in darkness. Jesus taught that you will recognize people by their fruit, meaning their life will reveal whether they are living according to God’s ways.
In contrast, the person who is walking in the light is not characterized by habitual sin, but by a pattern of turning away from sin. Walking in the light does not mean sinless perfection, but it does mean living openly before God, desiring to obey His truth, and not hiding sin.
This kind of life is marked by ongoing confession and agreeing with God about sin and bringing it into the light. As this happens, the blood of Jesus continually cleanses from all sin.
When you live in this way, you will experience genuine fellowship with God and with other believers. This fellowship is not earned by their obedience, but is the result of walking in the light and relying on the cleansing work of Jesus. ~ Jeff M Newman
