Guard Your Heart With All Diligence

Proverbs 4:23 Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.

The heart is the command center of life. In the Bible, the heart is more than our emotions. It includes our thoughts, desires, will and moral choices. What we say, what we do and how we relate to others are influenced by the condition of our heart. Jesus said, “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Matthew 12:34). What comes out of our lives reveals what is taking place within our hearts.

This verse encourages us to guard our hearts with all diligence. The Hebrew expression carries the idea of vigilant and careful guarding. The picture is one of continual watchfulness. Just as a watchman would carefully watch for danger, we need to pay attention to what is entering our hearts and what is influencing our thoughts, desires and decisions. Proverbs 4:24-27 then gives practical examples by telling us to guard our speech, watch where we look, consider the path we take and turn away from evil.

We also need to recognize that we are engaged in spiritual warfare. The New Testament tells us to be alert because our adversary, the devil, seeks to devour, and it calls us to stand against his schemes (1 Peter 5:8; Ephesians 6:11). We should not live in fear, but we should live with spiritual awareness and dependence on God.

One way we guard our hearts is by filling your heart daily with God’s Word. Scripture gives us truth, exposes deception and teaches us how God wants us to live. Be alert in prayer. When you recognize sinful desires or temptation, immediately bring them to God. Ask Him for strength to resist temptation and for the willingness to obey His Word.

Fill your heart with thankfulness. Gratitude helps protect us from continually dwelling on what we lack and helps us remember God’s goodness and faithfulness. Fill your heart with worship. Worship shifts our attention away from ourselves and our circumstances and toward the greatness and goodness of God.
