Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
This is the first verse in the Bible and is traditionally understood to have been written by Moses. It is a sovereign declaration that God is the one and only Creator of the heavens and the earth.
This verse is the foundation of the entire biblical worldview. There is one true God who brought everything into existence by His own self-existent power. The Bible presents creation as a real historical event, not a myth.
“In the beginning” refers to the beginning of creation. This shows us that the universe had a beginning and was brought into existence by an eternal God who Himself has no beginning or end.
“God” is the Hebrew word Elohim. This is a grammatically plural noun used with a singular verb in this verse. It expresses God’s majesty and greatness.
“Created” is the Hebrew word bara. In the Bible, God is the subject of this verb in its creation context. The word emphasizes God’s unique work as Creator. This verse, along with other passages of Scripture, teaches that God created everything that exists. He did not depend on anything outside Himself to bring creation into existence.
“The heavens and the earth” refers to the totality of creation. Everything that exists, whether visible or invisible, owes its existence to this eternal, all-powerful God.
This verse teaches us that God alone is worthy of worship. He is all-powerful, and the heavens and the earth belong to Him. Recognize that the power of the God who created the universe is also able to redeem you. Through Jesus Christ, God makes those who are spiritually dead in their sins alive. Take time today to repeat this verse and meditate on the power of the God who created you and redeemed you through His Son, Jesus Christ. ~ Jeff M Newman
