“But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD. I will put My law in their minds and inscribe it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people. (Jeremiah 31:33)
In context, Jeremiah is writing to the Israelites who had broken the Mosaic Covenant. That covenant, written on stone, revealed God’s standard but could not transform their hearts. Their continual disobedience ultimately led to exile. However, Jeremiah points forward to a New Covenant based on inward transformation. God declares that He will put His law in their minds and write it on their hearts. He promises, “I will be their God, and they will be My people.” This points to the new birth and a restored relationship with God. This inward work of grace produces outward righteousness. The New Covenant through Jesus is not about what you can do for God, but about what God can do in you and through you. ~ Jeff M Newman
