In Lesson 62, we are going to study the last part of 1 John 2:24.
Let’s read this part of the verse:
1 John 2:24...If what you heard from the beginning abides in you then you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.
Now, let us go over the definitions of the words.
If what you heard (1437. ean)(191. akouó) — means if what you listened to or comprehended by hearing.
From the beginning (575. apo) (746. arché) — means from or away from the beginning or from the origin.
Abides in you (3306. menó) (1722. en) (4771. su) — means continues in, dwells in, or remains in you.
Then you also will abide (4771. su) (3306. menó) — Means you will also continue in, stay in, or remain in.
In the Son (1722. en) (3588. ho, hé, to) (5207. huios) — Means in the Son of God.
And in the Father (2532. kai) (1722. en) (3588. ho, hé, to) (3962. patér)— Means and in the heavenly Father.
In other words, if what you have listened to and understood from the beginning remains, dwells, or continues in you, then you also will remain, stay, and continue in the Son of God and in the Heavenly Father.
This verse contains both a condition and a promise.
Here is the condition: That you remain in the message you heard from the beginning, which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Here is the promise: You will continue to live in close fellowship with both the Son and the Father.
This means that it's possible to drift away from the truth if you don't actively let it remain in you. To "let it remain" means to intentionally hold on to the Gospel and let it shape your daily life.
Here are the main points of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Remind yourself of these regularly.
God loves you and wants you to experience an abundant, eternal life with him (John 3:16; John 10:10).
All have sinned and fall short of God's standard (Romans 3:23).
Sin separates us from God both now and for eternity. (Isaiah 59:2; Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:1-3)
Jesus is the Son of God, fully God and fully man. (John 1:1,14; Colossians 2:9; Philippians 2:6-8)
Jesus lived a sinless life and willingly died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3–4; Romans 1:4; Acts 2:24).
Jesus rose from the dead, proving His power over sin and death (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).
We cannot earn salvation through good works (Ephesians 2:8–9; Titus 3:5; Romans 11:6).
Salvation is a gift from God, received by repenting of sin and placing faith in Jesus Christ alone (Romans 10:9–10; Acts 3:19; John 14:6; Acts 4:12).
Those who trust in Jesus are forgiven, made new, and adopted into God’s family (2 Corinthians 5:17; John 1:12; Romans 8:15-17; Galatians 3:26).
The Holy Spirit comes to live within believers, guiding and empowering them (Galatians 4:6; Romans 8:11; John 14:16-17; 1 Corinthians 3:16).
Believers have the promise of eternal life with God (John 5:24; John 3:36; 1 John 5:11-13).
Jesus will return to restore all things, and those who belong to Him will live forever in His presence (Revelation 21:1–4; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; 2 Peter 3:13).
Remaining in the truth takes intentionality. It's easy to get distracted by the world, so resist the lies and false teachings that try to pull you away.
Stay faithful to the truth. Make a habit of keeping God's Word in your heart—through memorizing Scripture, meditating on it, and studying the core teachings of Jesus. This is how you deepen your relationship with God and remain in Him.
Let’s look at some related verses that talk about remaining in the message you heard from the beginning.
In John 14:23, we read that when we faithfully keep Jesus’ words, both He and the Father will come and make their home within us. Remain faithful to the Gospel, obey what Jesus asks of you, and God’s presence will dwell in you.
John 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
In John 15:3-4, Jesus tells us to remain in Him. He promises that if we remain in Him, He will remain in us. He also promises that if we remain in Him, we will bear much fruit. Apart from Jesus, we can do nothing and will live unfruitful lives.
John 15:3-4 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.
In 1 John 1:3, John says he is proclaiming what he has seen and heard so that we may have fellowship with him. And truly, our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. This fellowship is made possible as the message of Jesus remains in us.
1 John 1:3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
In 1 John 4:13, we read that we can be confident that we remain in God and He in us, because He has given us His Spirit. The Holy Spirit assures us of God’s presence, strengthens us to live for Him, and leads us in truth.
1 John 4:13 By this we know that we remain in Him, and He in us: He has given us of His Spirit.
In John 17:21, we read a beautiful prayer where Jesus asks that all believers may be one, just as He is one with the Father. God desires a deep relationship with us. When the message of the Gospel that we heard from the beginning remains in us, we will live in unity with God.
John 17:21 that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
In conclusion, let the Gospel of Jesus Christ live deeply within you. When you do, you will abide in the Son and in the Father.
Here are some of the key takeaways from this lesson:
If you love Jesus and keep His word, He will make His home in you. (John 14:23)
If you remain in Jesus, your life will bear spiritual fruit. (John 15:3-4)
If the Gospel takes root in your heart, you’ll experience true fellowship—with God the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. (See 1 John 1:3)
You can be sure you remain in God because He has given you His Spirit. (See 1 John 4:13)
Jesus prayed that you would be one with Him, just as He is one with the Father. (1 John 4:13)
Remember this, God loves you deeply and desires a close, personal relationship with you. Spend time reading and meditating on His Word. Let the Gospel of Jesus Christ dwell in you richly—guiding your thoughts, strengthening your heart, and filling your life with hope. The Holy Spirit will continually remind you that you belong to God. Jesus longs for you to walk in unity with Him and with the Father.
Let’s read the last part of 1 John 2:24 one more time.
1 John 2:24...If what you heard from the beginning abides in you then you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.
