Hebrews 10:10 And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
This verse points us to the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. In the Old Testament, priests repeatedly offered sacrifices for sin, but those sacrifices could never permanently take away sin. Jesus offered Himself, the perfect and sinless Lamb of God, as the sacrifice for sin. His sacrifice was once for all.
Through faith in Christ, we are set apart for God because of what He has accomplished for us. This is called positional sanctification. Hebrews says, “we have been sanctified,” describing something God has already accomplished through Christ.
This does not mean we are already perfectly sinless or completely like Christ. God continues His work in us through progressive sanctification, as we grow in holiness and become more like Christ throughout our lives.
The final stage is glorification. When Christ appears, we will see Him as He is, and “we will be like Him” (1 John 3:2). God will complete His work of transforming us into the likeness of Christ.
Take a moment to reflect on what Jesus has done for you. He has saved you, He is transforming you, and one day He will complete that work. Your salvation rests on His finished work, your sanctification continues through His work in you, and your glorification will be the completion of His work. ~ Jeff M Newman
