The Law Became Our Guardian to Lead Us to Christ

Galatians 3:24 So the law became our guardian to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

God is holy and righteous. There is no sin in Him, and everything He does is right. Because the Law comes from God, it reflects His holiness, righteousness and goodness. His Law reveals His righteous standard and shows us how far we fall short.

A guardian is someone responsible for supervising and caring for a child. In the ancient world, a guardian would watch over a child, provide discipline and protect the child until the child reached maturity. Paul uses this picture to explain the role of the Law.

The Law exposes our sin and shows us our inability to perfectly live according to God’s righteous standard. It reveals our guilt and shows us our need for a Savior. Paul says that the Law was our guardian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith.

Nobody can perfectly keep God’s Law because we are sinners. We have all sinned and fallen short of God’s standard. The Law cannot save us. It reveals our sin, but it cannot justify us or make us righteous before God.

In order to be justified, we must put our faith in Jesus Christ. Christ died on the cross and bore the penalty for our sins. He willingly gave Himself for us so that we could be forgiven and declared righteous through faith in Him.

This means that you cannot be accepted by God because of your own righteousness or because of the good things you have done. The only way to be justified and made right with God is through faith in Jesus Christ. You are saved by God’s grace through faith, not by your works.

So let God’s righteous Law show you your need for Christ. When you see your sin and realize that you cannot save yourself, do not try to earn God’s acceptance through your own righteousness. Look to Christ and trust Him.
