The Person Who Controls Their Temper Is Greater Than One Who Captures a City

Proverbs 16:32 One who is slow to anger and patient is better than a warrior, and the person who controls their temper is greater than one who captures a city.

In context, the book of Proverbs teaches the difference between worldly wisdom and God’s wisdom. The world often values power, influence, and outward success. In contrast, God values patience and self-control. Solomon teaches that it is better to be patient than powerful and better to have self-control than to conquer a city. True strength is not found in overcoming others but in allowing God to rule your heart.

One of the greatest marks of spiritual maturity is learning to exercise self-control, especially when you are tempted to become angry. Jesus is the perfect example. During His earthly ministry, He was mocked, falsely accused, beaten, and crucified, yet He responded with patience, mercy, and forgiveness. He entrusted Himself to the Father instead of retaliating.

Ask God to help you become more like Christ when you are tempted to become angry. Depend on the Holy Spirit to give you the strength to respond with patience, self-control, and love. Every difficult situation is an opportunity to become more like Jesus. ~ Jeff M Newman
