In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. (John 1:1-2)
The Word is one of the titles of Jesus. John wrote that the Word was in the beginning, was with God, and was God. John is saying that the Word is eternal because the Word was there in the beginning and was with God. Since God is eternal, that makes the Word eternal as well.
