There Are Six Things That the Lord Hates

Proverbs 6:16-19 There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to Him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that run swiftly to evil, 19 a false witness who gives false testimony, and one who stirs up discord among brothers and sisters.

The first thing on this list the LORD hates is “haughty eyes.” When someone has haughty eyes that means they down on others with pride and arrogance. A proud person thinks too highly of themself and places themself above others and, ultimately, above God. Scripture says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). We are called to humble ourselves before God and recognize that He is the one who lifts us up, not ourselves.

The next thing God hates is “a lying tongue.” God is a God of truth, and Scripture says that lying lips are an abomination to Him (Proverbs 12:22). We should look to Jesus as our example. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). Everything Jesus says is true, and as Christians, we are called to put away falsehood and speak truthfully to one another (Ephesians 4:25).

Next are “hands that shed innocent blood.” God values human life because every person is created in His image (Genesis 1:27). This passage condemns the unjust taking of innocent life. God cares deeply about how we treat the people He has created.

God also hates “a heart that devises wicked plans.” Notice that God is concerned not only with our outward actions but also with what is happening inside our hearts. Sin can begin in our thoughts and desires before it ever becomes an outward action. Psalm 139:23–24 gives us a powerful prayer: “Search me, O God, and know my heart... See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Ask God to examine your heart and reveal anything that is leading you toward sin. Ask Him to guide your thoughts and your steps each day.

God also hates “feet that are swift in running to evil.” This describes someone who is eager and quick to pursue evil rather than turn away from it. As Christians, we are called to resist temptation and flee from sin rather than move toward it. Ask God to give you strength to resist temptation and choose what is righteous. First Peter 5:8 reminds us to remain alert because our adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour.

The sixth is “a false witness who speaks lies.” This goes beyond simply lying in everyday conversation. A false witness gives deceptive testimony about another person, potentially bringing injustice and harm. God cares deeply about truth and justice. As followers of Christ, our words should be truthful and should not be used to falsely accuse or harm others.

Finally, God hates “one who sows discord among brothers.” This is especially important because Proverbs has already described the wicked person as someone who “sows discord” (Proverbs 6:14). God cares about relationships and the unity of His people. We can contribute to division through gossip, slander, false accusations, harsh words, pride, or refusing to forgive. Ask yourself, “Am I helping bring people together in Christ, or am I contributing to division?”

When you look at Jesus, you see the perfect example of the character God desires in us. Jesus was humble rather than proud. He is the truth rather than a liar. He was completely righteous. He did not pursue evil. He did not falsely accuse others or seek revenge. Instead, He came to save sinners and reconcile us to God.

This is where this passage becomes important for sanctification. God doesn’t simply want to change your outward behavior. He wants to transform your heart. As you abide in Christ and walk by the Spirit, He changes your thoughts, attitudes, words, actions, and relationships. ~ Jeff M Newman
