My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. (1 John 2:1)
This verse gives us both a goal and the power to sustain that goal. John’s desire is that we would not sin but grow toward spiritual maturity. He understands that ongoing, habitual sin damages our fellowship with God and hinders our growth in holiness. Yet John also recognizes that sinless perfection is not possible in this life. That’s why he assures us that when we do sin, “we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.”
Jesus can be our Advocate because of what He accomplished on the cross. His righteousness and sacrifice make it possible for us to be forgiven and restored whenever we fall short. So continue to pursue holiness with confidence, knowing that Jesus is always interceding for you and standing on your behalf before the Father. ~ Jeff M Newman
