Philippians 2:3-4 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
In context, Paul is teaching Christians how to relate to other people. He calls us to live in humility, consider the needs of others, and put others before ourselves. We are to consider others more important than ourselves, not because we have no value, but because we are called to follow the humble example of Christ.
It is easy to put yourself at the center of everything and become completely self-focused. When this happens, it can become easier to get angry with other people. You may become frustrated when someone doesn’t listen to you, appreciate you, understand you, or interrupts you. Self-focus can cause you to become more concerned with getting your way than with loving and serving others.
When you look to Jesus, you see the perfect example of humility. He willingly sacrificed Himself for us. Jesus said that He came not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). We are called to have this same heart toward others.
Ask God to search your heart and reveal any areas of selfishness or self-focus in your life. Ask Him to humble you and help you consider others as Jesus does. As you become less focused on yourself and more focused on loving and serving others, you will be better equipped to respond with patience and self-control rather than becoming angry so quickly. ~ Jeff M Newman
