I Am Amazed How Quickly You Are Deserting the One Who Called You

Galatians 1:6-7 I am amazed how quickly you are deserting the One who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is not even a gospel. Evidently some people are troubling you and trying to distort the gospel of Christ.

In context, false teachers had infiltrated the Galatian churches and were leading the believers away from the true gospel. Paul had preached the gospel to these churches, but now some people were troubling them and trying to distort the gospel of Christ.

These false teachers were teaching that Gentile believers needed to be circumcised and observe the Mosaic Law in order to be justified and fully accepted by God. They were adding human works to God’s grace. Paul makes it clear that we are not justified by the works of the Law but by faith in Jesus Christ (Galatians 2:16).

Paul was amazed that the Galatians were so quickly deserting the One who had called them by the grace of Christ. They were turning away from the God who had saved them by grace and turning to a different gospel. Paul immediately explains that this was not another true gospel. It was a distortion of the gospel of Christ.

This shows us how seriously we should take the gospel. A message can sound biblical, mention Jesus and talk about salvation, yet still be distorted by adding something to the finished work of Christ.

The true gospel points you to Jesus Christ. You cannot earn God’s forgiveness. You cannot become righteous before God through your own good works. Salvation comes by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We are justified because of what Christ has done for us, not because of what we can do for God.

Be careful who you listen to. Ask yourself, “Are they preaching the true gospel?” Do they point you to Jesus Christ and His finished work, or are they adding human requirements to the gospel?

Know what the Bible teaches about Christ and salvation. Compare what you hear with God’s Word, and do not allow anyone to distort the gospel of Christ. Look to Christ and trust Him. ~ Jeff M Newman
