If We Say We Have No Sin, We Deceive Ourselves

1 John 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

In the previous verse, John says, “God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). God is absolutely pure and righteous. He has never sinned and never will. He is perfect.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. As Christians, we must acknowledge that we struggle with sin. God does not expect us to have reached sinless perfection. We are still growing, and we will continue to face the reality of sin in our lives. At the same time, John calls us to walk in the light and not continue living in darkness (1 John 1:6-7).

This does not give us a license to sin. When we sin, we should confess it to God. Confession means honestly acknowledging our sin and agreeing with God about what we have done. He promises to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). John says his desire is that we would not sin, but when we do sin, Jesus is our Advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1).

God is continuing His work of sanctification in our lives, helping us grow in holiness and become more like Christ. Don’t become discouraged when you recognize sin in your life. Bring it to God, confess it, receive His forgiveness and continue following Christ.

Trust that God is at work in you. He has saved you, He is transforming you, and one day, when Christ appears, you will be like Him (1 John 3:2).
