Welcome back to the Hope Bible School verse-by-verse Bible study of 1 John.
We just finished studying 1 John 1:4.
We learned that we are to follow the example of the disciples and use writing to share God's grace with others so they can experience complete joy. We also learned that there is joy in the presence of God, that you will rejoice when you understand God's grace in your life, that joy comes from having the Spirit of God in your life, that we are to rejoice in God at all times, and that you will experience joy when you lead people to Christ by sharing the word of God with others.
In this lesson we’re going to learn that God is light.
Let’s read our verse together.
1 John 1:5 And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
This is a message that was communicated by Jesus, to people that were with Jesus, and now is being communicated to you.
This message carries significant authority and is not a personal opinion or interpretation.
This is a message that God is saying about Himself and wants you to understand.
God is light means that He is absolutely perfect, pure, righteous, free of defects, joyful, sinless, holy and moral.
God is light means that He is the ultimate source of goodness and truth.
God is light means that He is perfect.
In Him there is no darkness at all means that God is completely free of any blemishes, defects, falsehood, ignorance, misery, errors, death, or sin.
There is an absolute absence of darkness in God.
Just as light is crucial for growth in the physical world, the light of God is indispensable for spiritual growth.
When you draw near to God in your life, you will be increasingly filled with light and you will experience spiritual growth.
Let's read through some verses that speak about the light of God.
In Psalm 27:1 we read that the LORD is my light. This means that the LORD can be your personal guide through life. He will light your path, keep you from darkness, and protect you.
Psalm 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—whom shall I dread?
In Psalm 104:2 we read that God wraps Himself in light. This reinforces the idea that God is holy and righteous. He is clothed in purity.
Psalm 104:2 He wraps Himself in light as with a garment; He stretches out the heavens like a tent,
In Daniel 2:22 we read that light dwells with God. This emphasizes that God is the ultimate source of light and knowledge. God can bring understanding to your life. God's knowledge is deep and He knows all things.
Daniel 2:22 He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with Him.
In John 8:12 we read that Jesus is the light of the world. Jesus is claiming to be the ultimate source of goodness, truth and knowledge. Jesus is claiming that He can help you navigate through this dark world and when you follow him you can have the light of life.
John 8:12 Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
In 1 Peter 2:9 we read that we are called to leave darkness and come into His marvelous light and to proclaim the virtues of God to the world.
1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
In James 1:17 we read that in God there is no change or shifting shadow. This means that God's light is constant and reliable.
James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow.
In Revelation 21:23 we read that God's glory is the source of light. There is no need for any other source of light in the city of God. One day believers will live in this city and experience the glory of God that illuminates the city.
Revelation 21:23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its lamp.
In conclusion God is light. God is calling you out of darkness and into His marvelous light. Let God light your path and be your guide through life. God is wrapped in light like a garment. His light is constant and reliable. When you believe in God, one day you will live in the city of God where there is no need of sun or moon because the glory of God will illuminate everything.
Remember, God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.
