1 Peter 4:8 Above all, love one another deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
God wants you to love people the way Christ loves you. Jesus came to this earth and willingly went to the cross to pay the penalty for your sins. He took the punishment you deserved so that you could be forgiven and reconciled to God. Because Christ has shown you such great mercy and forgiveness, you are called to extend that same forgiveness to others. Colossians 3:13 says, “Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
When someone hurts you or offends you, bring that offense to God. Ask Him to help you forgive that person as He has forgiven you. This is part of what Peter means when he says that “love covers over a multitude of sins.” Love doesn’t keep a running record of offenses, continually bring them up, gossip about them, or use someone’s past failures against them. Instead, love chooses forgiveness, grace and restoration.
This doesn’t mean that you ignore serious sin, tolerate abuse, or refuse to address something that needs to be confronted. Sometimes love requires you to speak the truth. But even when you must address a difficult situation, you can do it without hatred, revenge, or bitterness. Ask God to help you speak with truth, gentleness and love.
As you walk by the Spirit, God will transform the way you respond to people. You may begin to notice that you aren’t getting as easily angered or resentful as you once did. You will become more patient, forgiving and gracious because Christ is changing you from the inside out.
When someone hurts you, go to God first. Before you react, pray. Before you speak, ask the Holy Spirit for self-control. Before you keep a record of the offense, remember how much Christ has forgiven you.
Let the love of Christ control your response. Be slow to anger, quick to forgive, and willing to extend grace. As you abide in Christ, allow Him to teach you to love others the way He has loved you. ~ Jeff M Newman
