Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. (John 7:37-39)
In context, Jesus was speaking during the Feast of Tabernacles. During this Jewish festival, there was a water-pouring ceremony in which people expressed gratitude to God for the rains and made a plea for abundant rain in the coming year. This ritual also looked forward to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 12:3; Joel 2:28-29). In this passage, Jesus declares that He is the fulfillment of these prophecies. To those who believe in Him, He promises that they will be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will satisfy the believer's deepest needs and flow out to others, bringing life to them as well.
