Hebrews 9:13-14 For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that their bodies are clean, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God, purify our consciences from works of death, so that we may serve the living God!
This verse refers to the Old Testament system established in the Law of Moses. The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer provided outward cleansing and restored people to worship.
The issue is that these sacrifices did not remove sin at its root. They dealt with ceremonial impurity but could not cleanse the conscience. Sin brings death and separation from God. The Old Covenant sacrifices pointed forward to something greater.
This is why we need the pure blood of Christ. Jesus offered Himself unblemished to God through the eternal Spirit. His sacrifice was perfect and once for all.
Only through the blood of Christ are we cleansed inwardly. He purifies our conscience from dead works so that we may serve the living God. Be assured that His sacrifice is sufficient for you. Live by faith in this grace and serve Him with confidence and gratitude. ~ Jeff M Newman
