John 5:39-40 You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that by them you possess eternal life. These are the very words that testify about Me, 40 yet you refuse to come to Me to have life.
Jesus is speaking to Jewish religious leaders who had extensively studied the Scriptures. He is showing them that, although they diligently studied God’s Word, they had missed its ultimate purpose. The Scriptures testify about Jesus. Yet they refused to come to Him to receive life.
This shows us that a relationship with God isn’t simply about gaining knowledge from Scripture. It is about knowing and trusting the One whom Scripture reveals. Bible study is essential, but knowledge should lead us to Christ, worship, faith and obedience.
As you read the Bible, communicate with God through prayer. Ask Him to teach you, reveal His truth to you and show you how to apply what you are learning. Then put His Word into practice. Jesus wants to transform your life and give you the strength to follow Him.
Don’t simply read God’s Word for information. Come to Christ through His Word and allow Him to transform you as you abide in Him. ~ Jeff M Newman
