“Watch out!” Jesus told them. “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” (Matthew 16:6)
The Pharisees and Sadducees were two prominent Jewish groups in Jesus’ time.
Jesus is warning the disciples against the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Their teachings focused on external rituals rather than true heart transformation. They teachings were hypocritical and legalistic.
Jesus used the metaphor of leaven or yeast to illustrate a spiritual lesson.
Leaven is used to make dough rise and expand.
Jesus is warning us against false teachers, whose teaching can rise up and expand in our life and impact our relationship with God.
Be on guard against false teachers. Be discerning and critically evaluate their teachings against the true message of the Gospel. ~ Jeff M Newman
